I Need Air Conditioning Added To My Home With Radiators; What are My Options?
You have recently moved into a new home with radiators or have been enjoying one that has radiators and is considering air conditioning. Radiator heating is one of our favorite ways to heat a home because of the wonderful comfort it provides its occupants. The reason for the comfort is that the radiator must heat up to provide you heat and then it continues to stay warm for a time after the heating system has satisfied the thermostat. This continued heat improves the overall comfort in the home.
Homes with radiators do not have duct work and therefore your home will require additional equipment or ductwork to provide you air conditioning. In this article, we will discuss the air conditioning options you have available to be comfortable in your home with radiators.
Adding Ductwork Into Your Home
Ductwork can be added to any existing home. This ductwork will be used to carry the cool air throughout your home and provide you comfort. Added ductwork to your home sounds exhausting and it is. During these types of projects, your home turns into a bit of a construction site; walls need to opened, dust containment systems put in place, holes cut in your floor and ceiling. Sound appealing? Maybe or maybe not.
If the above does not sound appealing, one option for ducted Air Conditioning systems is called High-Velocity Small-Duct Systems (Unico System). This type of system takes the traditional ductwork system and downsizes it by 30-50%. It is less intrusive to install but in turn, costs 30-50% more. The installations can still range from 1 day to 7 days. The companies that install High-Velocity Small-Duct Air Conditioning systems in one day generally have 4-10 construction & HVAC workers in your home, including a carpenter to assist in opening walls, floors, and ceilings.
Ductless Air Conditioning
Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioning Systems (ductless heat pumps) are designed for homes that do not have ductwork. These units are designed to cool a specific room or your entire home. The largest advantage of this type of system is that it requires very little work to be done inside the home; eliminating dust and debris in your home (no construction site for this one). Most of the work happens outside of your home. Click here for more info on Ductless, mini split air conditioning systems.
Ductless Heat Pumps are also 30-70% more efficient than traditional air conditioning systems and provide you heating to your home. Homes with Radiators have those Spring and Fall mornings that get kind of chilly and the ductless heat pump allows you to heat the area of the home you want to without turning on your huge boiler and radiator system.
Window AC Units
Window AC units are always an easy option but they are noisy and expensive to operate. These units are one of the most costly appliances in your home when running. Window AC units also provide an easy opportunity for a burglar to enter your home. Overall they are not an effective way to cool your home.
