Shopping for an air conditioner in Minneapolis or St. Paul? Compare its SEER2 rating, which measures cooling output against power use over a cooling season. A higher rating means greater rated efficiency. The right choice also depends on the installed price and how much you use your AC.

Minnesota has a shorter cooling season than many southern states. A more efficient system can cut cooling costs, but the added price may take longer to pay back. Here is what to compare:

What Are SEER2 Ratings?

SEER2 is the current version of the seasonal efficiency rating. It uses a revised test that better accounts for resistance to airflow. DOE introduced the new ratings in 2023. Compare SEER2 with SEER2 on new quotes. An older SEER number is not a direct match.

Look at the rating for the matched indoor and outdoor equipment. The EnergyGuide label helps you compare models. Correct sizing, sound ductwork and a good installation also affect how much power the system uses in your home.

For most new split-system central air conditioners in Minnesota, the federal minimum is 13.4 SEER2. Heat pumps and some other equipment types have different standards. Your installer should check the rating and requirements for the exact system you choose.

What Affects the Price of a Higher-SEER2 System?

A higher SEER2 rating often comes with a higher installed price. Compare quotes for systems of the same size and scope. Include the indoor coil, controls, electrical work and any duct changes.

There is no fixed dollar premium for moving between efficiency levels. Compressor type, equipment size and installation work can all change the price. Use our Minnesota AC replacement cost guide to plan your budget, then compare written quotes for your home.

Some higher-efficiency models also offer variable-speed operation. That can help with humidity control and noise, but check the features on each model. The rating alone does not tell you how quiet or comfortable a system will be.

Is a Higher SEER2 Rating Worth the Cost?

For the same cooling output, a 16-SEER2 system has about 12.5% lower rated energy use than a 14-SEER2 system: 1 minus 14 divided by 16. That is a rating comparison, not a forecast for your whole electric bill. Weather, thermostat settings and duct leaks affect actual use.

Compare the added installed cost with the expected yearly cooling savings. If an upgrade costs $1,000 more and saves $100 a year, simple payback is 10 years. Those figures are an example. Ask for an estimate based on your home and electric rate, then weigh comfort and warranty terms too.
